You learned not to. Something or someone taught you that trust is expensive, and you adjusted.

What this type means

The Burnt pattern shows low extension across the board — usually traceable to a specific betrayal (or sustained early-life pattern of betrayal) that re-architected the trust system. Often co-occurs with elevated anxiety in close relationships and avoidance of vulnerability. The good news: the literature shows this pattern is highly responsive to corrective relational experience over years.

In relationships

You're cautious to a degree that feels protective. The cost: you screen out a lot of people who would have been safe. Some of them notice.

Watch for

The protection was earned. The over-application may not be. Distinguish between "this person reminds me of someone who hurt me" and "this person is actually them."

The growth edge

Identify one specific category — small stakes — where you can practice low-cost trust extension. Build the muscle on training wheels. The full-trust capacity comes back slowly.
