The Perspective Gap · Mirrors what they think you want

The Echo

You're sensitive enough to read what someone wants you to say — and you say it. The cost: you may not actually know what YOU think anymore.

What this type means

The Echo has high modeling capacity but uses it for mirror response rather than independent reply. Highly attuned to what the other person wants to hear, often historically rewarded for delivering it. Common in adult children of households where conflict was punished — the survival skill became identity.

The cost is real but often invisible to the Echo themselves: their own opinions, once highly developed, can become functionally inaccessible — they "don't know" what they think, because the read-and-respond loop bypasses the internal-reflection step.

In relationships

People enjoy your company because conversations feel smooth. Over time, the people closest to you notice they don't actually know what you believe — and the relationship plateaus because there's no real point of contact.

Watch for

Mirroring is a survival skill, often learned early. It works socially. It costs identity. The work is to risk friction — disagree out loud, just to remind yourself you have a position.

The growth edge

Pick one belief you've been hiding from a specific person, and tell them this month. Not aggressively — just present it. The relationship will either get realer or you'll learn it can't hold the real you.
